Chiabva abandons Mutambara

from the ZimbabweTimes

HARARE – Former MDC legislator for Harare South constituency Gabriel Chaibva has abandoned the smaller MDC party led by Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara to rejoin President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF.

In a letter to the MDC-M’s deputy president Gibson Sibanda dated, January 1, the controversial politician described Zanu-PF as the “people’s party” while branding his party as a “tribal grouping”....

Chaibva joins independent Tsholotsho North legislator Jonathan Moyo who has also rejoined Zanu PF.

At party level, he becomes one of its frustrated senior officials in the MDC-M who have abandoned the embattled party citing alleged abuse of power by Mutambara’s executive.

Job Sikhala, a former legislator who lost his St Mary’s seat for siding with the less popular Mutambara group, left the party last
year.

Mutambara speaks

From the Zim Mail

"In my opinion, the starting point is to remove ignorance and to remove arrogance on the part of the West vis-à-vis what’s good for Africa," he said.

"So we, for example in this inclusive Govern-ment, we are guided by Sadc member countries, they said ‘do it in your country’s national interest’.

"Once they advise us to do that, we cannot succeed if we go up against them.

"So the greatest influence over the future of Zimbabwean politics lies not with the intervention of Western governments, but rather lies with Africa and the will of the African people," he said...

On elections, he said while the GPA said they should be held within two years of the signing of the agreement, what was more important was the creation of conditions so that the poll outcome would not be disputed.

Leaders to talk

from Reuters

...Welshman Ncube, Industry and Commerce Minister and secretary general of a splinter Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), told industrialists that Tsvangirai's decision to disengage from Mugabe ZANU-PF had shaken renewed investor confidence in the country. The MDC boycott has sparked the country's biggest political crisis since the formation of a new administration and while analysts say the decision may not mean the end of the fragile coalition, it will put pressure on regional leaders to act. "I am happy to say that in the last 48 hours the political leadership of the three political parties have resolved that they need to holistically look at the issues that have led to the current situation," Ncube said. "We hope that in the next two to three days there will be a meeting of the three leaders to discuss those issues." Ncube's boss and deputy prime minister Arthur Mutambara met Mugabe on Monday over the MDC boycott....

Mutambara blasts both sides

from the VOA

The leader of one formation of Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change on Monday urged members of both MDC groupings not to delay passage of a constitutional amendment needed to put a national unity government in place, warning this could lead President Robert Mugabe to dissolve parliament and call for new elections.

Arthur Mutambara, leader of the smaller MDC formation, said the opposition would be sure to lose such elections which he said would be held "under June 27 conditions," a reference to the deadly violence which ushered in the president runoff held on that date last year.

Mutambara criticized both the president and Tsvangirai for "prevaricating" on the formation of the government of national unity contemplated in the power-sharing agreement signed Sept. 15 by both MDC formation leaders and Mr. Mugabe ....

Why Mutambara joined Mugabe

from Zimdaily:

Part of the deal is that the former student leader was guaranteed by Mugabe the position of deputy prime minister as well as appointment into parliament of his faction's secretary general Welshman Ncube and his deputy, Priscilla Mishairabwi Mushonga.

In return, the Mutambara faction pledged to support Mugabe's proposed power structure that effectively puts Tsvangirai into a merely ceremonial position of prime minister.

In addition, Mutambara was also hired by Mugabe to join and help him in taking an anti-Tsvangirai and anti-west stance characterised by lashing out at the aged dictator's perceived enemies.....

Mutambara has already embarked on that mission and lately been on a warpath against the west as well as taking every opportunity to demean the person and leadership of Tsvangirai....

Mugabe offered him the position of deputy prime minister in return for support of his policies and proposed power sharing arrangement which Tsvangirai has been rejecting," an official directly involved in the talks efforts stated.

Zimdaily confirmed through a top source, whose identity we cannot reveal, that the proposed power structure that Tsvangirai has been refusing to sign has Mutambara as the deputy prime minister, with of course Tsvangirai as the prime minister but both reporting to Mugabe.....
